The upgrade to two blocks of downtown Vernon is going to take longer than expected due to the weather. City of Vernon infrastructure engineer Mark Dowhaniuk says the rain this week has delayed the expected completion of June 28. "From day one we've said if we had a poor June like we did last year then the scheduled we had proposed and had in our contract wouldn't be achievable," says Dowhaniuk. Dowhaniuk says the crew can still do certain things in the rain but they can't pour concrete.
"It can be very challenging, and we don't want to ruin the finish on that concrete." He says the extent of the delay will depend on the weather, but at this point, he's shooting for completion in early July. The 2.4 million dollar project has been adding wider sidewalks, landscaping and other amenities in the 3300 to 3500 blocks of 30th Avenue from since late March. Pedestrians still have access to the businesses in the improvement area, but road traffic is blocked off.
