The campaign calling for a closer look at amalgamation of Greater Vernon is said to have gathered well over two thousand supporters. Director Bruce Shepherd of the Greater Vernon Governance Society says they'll have a better picture closer to month's end when the written petitions come in to join the online ones that, at last check, is at 1,273 names. Shepherd says they have a broad idea of how many signatures would be needed for the province to follow up. "The only guidance we've been given by the provincial government is as many as we can get, so we're looking for anywhere between three and four thousand. That would be a reasonable representation," Shepherd tells Kiss FM. At this point he says they have volunteers going door to door collecting names as well as the online drive. Their aim is to get the province to provide options and costs with a possible referendum in November 2014. "There's over 27 million dollars spent on the three goverance areas areas per year and we feel a 20% reduction in those costs, or about 5.6 million dollars, is a reasonable expectation that could be used for other priorities," says Shepherd.
