Transit Petition Stalled By Costs

Written by Peter McIntyre 107.5 KISSFM  Wednesday, 16 October 2013 06:01
A petition calling for improved transit service in Greater Vernon has hit a cost roadblock. A 3,191 name document was presented to city council by resident Winnifred Hibbert last month. She called for bus service from 6 am to 11 pm, every 15 minutes, seven days a week -- but councillor Patrick Nicol says that would cost an extra 12 million dollars a year. "She put that out as an idea, and the costs are beyond the ability for the taxpayers to pay, but what's she's looking at is the future," says Nicol. Councillor Bob Spiers says the city will consider the request as it plans for gradual expansion of the service. "It's just going to be part of the discussions within the budget of what we can ultimately afford. Everyone wants the Cadillac version." When she delivered the petition to council, Hibbert said the longer hours would better meet the needs of working people, and make it safer for women to get around at night.
