When I received enough support to get a Council Seat the dogma of the establishment became : "Better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside pissing in." (Only time will tell !)
Perhaps someone should check the facts about this location. The NORD rezone this area from Agriculture to Country Residential about three years ago.
The orchards that exist in this area are primarily hobby farms allowing said owners to take Income Tax deductions.
As to the Foothills Subdivision shown in the Video, the are not affected by same and only Nimby's, generally retired swivel servants and lower mainland people who sold out their properties and moved to the Vernon area.
The removal of gravel will have no long term affect on the area. The operator has resided in this area and employed people for many years contrary to the Nimby's and other well off retired individuals, who I might add go South for the winter to AZ, NM, CA, NV.
Kalwest is not very informed, and he/she should check the facts before making uninformed statements. The property is still in the Agricultural land reserve and is zoned Country Residential. The regional district let a gravel extraction clause be added 3 years ago. However the gravel attraction is an allowable use. It is NOT a guaranteed use. The gravel extraction clause was intended for the average property owner that wanted to take out 500 m3 of excess fill. It was not intended for a property owner to take out 500 m3 every week! (as in a gravel pit) The people that live in the area have lived and worked in the Vernon area for decades and contributed to the area as business owners and employees. There is only one property owner that goes south during the winter. They have developed their properties cautiously while preserving the fragile eco system along the BX creek and ravine. Most of the hobby farms are too small for tax deductions and if Kalwest knew the laws, he would KNOW that. The removal of gravel has an immediate and permanent affect on the area. The gravel pit has been in operation illegally for over a year and the owner has no regard for the rules and regulations that everyone else abides by. Look at other properties the company has purchased and you will see the mess and destruction left behind when he sold it. This property is no different. He plans to strip it of the gravel. He is hauling out the topsoil by truckloads and stripping the timber. As he continues on his agenda, he is making the property useless for any future property owner to use it for agriculture. The operator DOES NOT live in the area and has no regard for anyone living here as per his statement to the news when he said he has no interest in cooperating with the neighbors. He continually speeds down Brentwood road in his trucks, and gives everyone the middle finger when he sees them. This property is in the Agricultural land reserve. It is in a watershed and along a creek that is a potential water supply for the City of Vernon. Read the rules ... Gravel pits are NOT allowed in agricultural land reserves, and definitely not allowed in a watershed.
