Mayor Wants Governance Issue 'Put To Bed'

Vernon residents may still have a say on the local governance issue this fall, even though prospects for a study look dim. Mayor Rob Sawatzky tells Kiss FM, it wouldn't cost anything to ask residents if they support an amalgamation study, as it would part of the municipal elections. "And it really is the only way to put it to bed from our point of view," says Sawatzky. Vernon council has already passed a motion to put the governance question (if a study should be held) on the ballot this fall, and is encouraging its regional partners to do the same. However, if the vote passed, Sawatzky doesn't think the city should fund it. "Why would a jurisdiction fund a study that is not likely to show cost savings, and doesn't have a partner, and can't move forward? It's not particularly logical." MLA Eric Foster said earlier this week the province won't fund the study, unless all the local jurisdictions agree to it. Coldstream and the directors for electoral areas B and C have rejected taking part in a study.
