Vernon has its first candidate running for mayor in this fall's elections. Klaus Tribes, a former councillor, announced he intends to run for the top job at city hall. One of his priorities is to open the city to business. "Over the years, council have been accused of chasing business away from Vernon and that's what I'm saying. My attitude will be, if we can make it somehow work, we'll make it work," Tribes told Kiss FM and other media at the Fairfield Inn where he currently works as a breakfast ambassador. The 74 year old Tribes says he has the drive, energy, and desire to give the position his full attention. Tribes ran a restaurant in Vernon for 39 years and spent 18 year on council over 25 years, ending with a failed bid for mayor against Sean Harvey in 2002.

PMA familiar face wants to re-enter the political ring in Vernon. Klaus Tribes, who was a councillor for 18 years over a 25-year period, announced Wednesday that he will run for mayor in November's civic election. "I have the drive, energy and desire to give the position my full attention," he said. "I intend to be a hands-on mayor and involve myself with the day-to-day operations of the city." Among Tribes' focus during a campaign will be encouraging business investment in the community and development of a second ice sheet and possibly a trade and convention centre. Tribes ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2002, bringing his political career to an end. A former police officer, he ran a restaurant downtown for almost 40 years and is currently a breakfast ambassador at the Fairfield Inn. He plans on knocking on doors soon as part of his campaign. "I think we have something to contribute and make it work for the city," said Tribes. Mayor Rob Sawatzky has not indicated if he will seek re-election in November.
