Band Claims Rail Property

Written by Glen Morrison 107.5 KISSFM Monday, 30 June 2014 09:57
The Okanagan Indian Band has stepped into the question of saving the rail line from Vernon to Kelowna. They're asking the Harper government to buy the line. Band Chief Byron Lewis says the line runs through a significant part of the band's Commonage Reserve, set up in 1877 and never lawfully surrendered of lawfully taken. The Chief says there had been talks years ago on that claim, started by the federal government, then ended by them. Lewis says their entitlement to the lands remains and the government cannot ignore the unresolved issues.

At a price tag of $50,000,000 every jurisdiction ought to be at the table. As we all know this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Cheers Shawn Lee
