The deluge that dropped 11 millimetres of rain in less than an hour yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon in Vernon has caused thousands of dollars in damage to Butcher Boys grocery store. Manager Brent Ohashi says small floods have happened in the store in past, but nothing like the amount of water that flooded in yesterday. "I wouldn't like to venture a guess," said Ohashi, "our loading dock is five feet deep at one end and it is filled completely. I don't know how much water came in, but it was lots!" As a health and safety precaution, Ohashi says any food that was on the floor or not on shelves above the flood water has been thrown out.

Cleanup continues following Tuesday storm
City crews continue the cleanup of Vernon streets following the severe rain and hail storm on Tuesday afternoon. Storm water sewer systems drained properly during the storm although the high volume of water exceeded the sewer capacity in many areas of the city, including the downtown core. Asphalt in front of the library was lifted by the storm water and engineers are assessing the damage. However, most repair and cleanup work to other damaged asphalt in the city will be completed by Wednesday evening.
Some of the City’s buildings experienced flood damage. A restoration company was called to the Science Centre in Polson Park immediately following the storm to assess and mediate damage after water seeped into the classrooms. Additionally, the main fire hall downtown had up to two centimetres of water in the basement. The extent of damage to both buildings is still unknown.
