Vernon Tattoo secures RCMP pipe band, ceremonial troop

The Okanagan Military Tattoo, planned for Vernon on the August long weekend, will have a big RCMP presence. “We have been working with various operating units of the RCMP and our work is paying off,” said producer and director Norm Crerar. The RCMP Pipe Band and the RCMP Ceremonial Troop will both perform. “This is huge,” Crerar said. “In all, there will be some 80 uniformed RCMP members in the performance and 10 or so more as support.” The RCMP has seven official pipe bands across Canada, but their obligation to the national office is to supply pipers and drummers for national events, which at times leaves bands in one or more parts of the country short a few members. Hugh Peden, pipe major of the E Division RCMP Pipe Band (British Columbia) has reached out to Edmonton and Regina for additional members. “It appears at this time that there will be 30 pipers and 20 drummers and dancers with the RCMP Pipe Band for the Okanagan Military Tattoo,” said Crerar. The RCMP Ceremonial Troop will perform on the floor in much the same manner that the famous RCMP Musical Ride does, but on foot. “Their precision and professionalism is really something to see,” said Crerar. “I was privileged to see the Troop in action at the Pacific Tattoo in Victoria last July and spoke with them then about coming to Vernon.” The troop will be chosen from all over B.C. and will train to perform at the Pacific Tattoo in Victoria July 12-13, then in Vernon for an evening presentation Aug. 1 and a matinee on Aug. 2. Joining the RCMP Pipe Band in the massed pipes and drums of the Tattoo will be pipe bands from Kamloops, Kelowna, Shuswap and Vernon’s two pipe bands, the Kalamalka Highlanders and the Arran Campbell Memorial Youth Band. “When these 100 pipers and drummers enter the floor at Kal Tire Place, the sound will be awesome,” said Crerar, a piper with the KHPB. “There is something about the pipes that makes people want to stand and cheer.”
