Higher Speed Limits For Highways

Written by Glen Morrison 107.5 KISSFM Wednesday, 02 July 2014 12:24
Speed limits are going up on several BC highways including the Coquihalla, which is currently is at 110, and will be increased to 120 km-h. In our area, the section of Highway 97 from College Way south of Vernon to Gatzke Road in Oyama will be increased from the current 90, to 100 km-h once an assessment is completed to determine if new medians are needed. Highway 97A from Armstrong to Enderby will also go from 90 to 100 while Highway 97 from Swan lake to Westside Road will go from 80 to 90 km-h. Transportation Minister Todd Stone says variable speed limits will also be tested on the Trans Canada between Revelstoke and Sicamous, as well as on the main Coquihalla near the snowshed and parts of the Sea to Sky highway. He says they'll use state of the art sensors and radar to determine weather conditions and recommend to traffic engineers what the speed limit should be at a particular time. Stone says changes will also be made to ensure drivers keep right except to pass, but he didn't say if that means police will be allowed to ticket so-called left-lane hogs. Stone adds says legislation will be updated to include M&S tires as "winter tires."
