The director for rural Lumby has been elected the new chair of the North Okanagan Regional District board. Rick Fairbairn defeated Vernon's Juliette Cunningham for the position. "I think it's important that an electoral area director is in one of the positions, chair or vice chair, which has happened," Fairbairn tells Kiss FM. Fairbairn, director for Area D, had been the board's interim chair since the death of former chair Patrick Nicol of Vernon last January. He says his leadership will provide a smooth transition to deal with Greater Vernon water's future and parks plans, adding there's positive signs the board can make progress. "We have been cooperating very well together, and with the newly appointed directors, there's a good spirit of cooperation." Lumby director Kevin Acton is the new vice chair, defeating Cunningham and Doug Dirk of Coldstream in a vote.
