Vernon's mayor is hoping the closure of the city's Target store won't leave a big gap in the city's retail market. Akbal Mund says the 100 or so Target job losses will be tough, but he feels other businesses will be hiring as they take over those customers. "When you look at Vernon, I still believe there's nothing between Vernon and Calgary and we are the first hub that everybody travels to, so I'm very optimistic that somebody else will go on there." Mund, a former partner with Wendy's Restaurants, says his personal choice would to get IKEA in the city. "This is me speaking on my own. I would like to see an IKEA here and the reason why I say that is their model is a million people which means we could put one in Vernon which is centrally located between Penticton Kelowna and Kamloops, everybody from the Alberta border and in." Mund says Costco has also been talked about but he doesn't see that happening as they already have outlets in Kelowna and Kamloops. They like to have a half a million people within the surrounding area and unfortunately Kelowna and Kamloops have ones so I don't think we'll ever see a Costco in Vernon," adds Mund. The Target in the Village green Centre is one of 133 in Canada closing in the next four to five months.
