The City of Vernon received the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting (CanFR) from the Government Financial Officers Association (GFOA) in Monday’s regular session of Council—an award the City and Kevin Bertles, Director of Financial Services, have received for the last five years. The purpose of the GFOA award program is to encourage and assist Canadian local governments to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles—to prepare comprehensive annual financial reports that demonstrate the spirit of transparency and full disclosure. The award recognizes excellence in governmental accounting and financial reporting and represents a significant accomplishment by a municipal government and its management. When the award is presented to a government, a Canadian Award for Financial Reporting Achievement is also presented to the CFO, who is designated as the individual primarily responsible for having received the CanFR. Mayor Akbal Mund presented the award to Bertles on behalf of GFOA. “Vernon Council, management and staff are again very proud of Mr. Bertles and his staff for achieving this standard of excellence five years in a row,” said Mayor Mund. “It is a demonstration to Vernon citizens of the City’s financial responsibility and transparency, and of the high standards we on Council have set and will continue to set for this organization and administration.” “The goal remains to deliver fiscally transparent documents and convey financial information that supports the solid fiscal framework upon which our budget is based,” said Bertles. “We use the feedback from the review program and other professional sources to prepare the next annual report. We are extremely pleased with the collaborative effort that our team has put into the continual development of our annual report since we have been a participant in this program and since our first award five years ago.” Only 60 Canadian municipalities nationwide and 25 municipalities in B.C. received this award for the 2013 annual reports.
