Meeting Thaws Ice On Arena Vote

Greater Vernon's stalled arena referendum won't get the backing of Victoria, but an alternative proposal could be put to voters later this year. "The original one (proposal) is dead in the water," says Vernon mayor Akbal Mund. "That's why we had sent them an email with another option which they said sounds reasonable. But they want to look at the wording of it, and review it with their staff," says Mund. Mund and Regional District of North Okanagan chair Rick Fairbairn met with Community Minister Coralee Oakes in Victoria today to talk about a borrowing referendum to add a second ice sheet at Kal Tire Place to replace the Civic Arena. The question was set to go to voters last fall until the province quashed it over concerns the regional district wanted to expand a facility owned by the City of Vernon. Mund says the alternative will have RDNO owning the second sheet and leasing it back to the city. "And it would eventually come back to Vernon (ownership) after the debt has been paid, so it's sort of the same, but we would have to wait until the debt has been paid," Mund tells Kiss FM. Mund says he would like to see a referendum held this spring or in the fall, to allow the 78 year old Civic Arena to be replaced as an ice sheet. "We're thinking positively here, and I think it was worth it to take the trip down here to meet face to face," says the mayor.
