The situation faced by bus riders traveling between Vernon and UBC Okanagan has caught the attention of a Vernon city councillor. Brian Quiring wants an additional bus to be added to the route. The route travels on Highway 97 and Quiring says passengers are forced to stand on overcrowded buses. “It seems awfully strange that you can be smoking down the highway at 90 km/hr with kids standing there hanging onto a pole,” says Quiring. “It just doesn’t seem safe at all.” Currently two buses serve the route. BC Transit says their contract is with the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) and so far the RDNO has not formally asked for service levels to be increased on that particular route. “Regulations allow BC Transit to have some riders on buses stand provided there are a sufficient number of handholds, straps or other equipment on board to safely provide support. The buses being used on Route 90 are properly equipped to accommodate standing passengers,” writes spokesperson John Barry.

Only BC Transit has an exception for highway travel with standee's.
Also I saw a strap break that you hold on to while standing.
What does properly equipped mean when standing in a bus a high way speed? Cheers Shawn Lee
The bars are installed on the bus to hang on to, no air bags!
