Best Option" For Water Plan

Vernon's mayor supports a change to the master water plan, but doesn't think it will actually happen. Akbal Mund says switching domestic customers from the Duteau Creek source, to Kalamalka and Okanagan lakes, as a citizens group is pushing for, makes sense. "Do I believe that's going to happen? Probably not, but I do believe that's the best option out there, so if you ask me if I agree with those citizens, sure I do. I just think there's a lot of variables in our way, and if that was the option we should have been looking at it 10 to 15 years ago," Mund tells Kiss FM. Mund says changing the direction now, could end up costing a lot more money. "When you move in a different direction, it's hard to go back and say 'Let's do this now,' because you're spending a lot more money, and as we know, everything revolves around decisions around money," adds Mund, who has been Vernon's mayor since December. Greater Vernon Advisory Committee directors will be discussing options for the master water plan in the coming months. The group, Citizens For Change, is lobbying for changes to the system after a $70 million referendum for six master water plan projects, was rejected by 66% of Greater Vernon voters in November.
