Public Transit riders in the Central Okanagan will be facing new rates for single riders, ticket packages and monthly passes effective September 1st. The first increases since 2012 were approved Monday by the Central Okanagan Regional District. Those increases won't affect North Okanagan patrons, but a review of fares in the Vernon area is also underway. Nicole Court, at the Regional District of the North Okanagan, says discussion with BC Transit has been ongoing for the past year. "We don't want to raise our fees and change ridership numbers. There's also the talk of why don't we make it all free, and of course, that would then change all our taxes, so we have to be very careful about how we do it," says Court. Court says Route #90 from Vernon to UBC-Okanagan in particular, is being looked at. "That's mostly used by students who have a U-Pass and that does not come close to the 2.50 that it actually costs as a fare between Vernon and UBC Okanagan," she says. Court says any prospective changes are still a number of months away in the North Okanagan.
