The cost of Vernon's new running track is going up again. An additional $340,000 will be added to the $7.5-million Greater Vernon community sports field and athletics facility – which is already over budget. Regional District of North Okanagan directors have made an amendment to RDNO's 2015 financial plan to allow for the extra cost, which will fund the addition of showers to the amenities building at the new facility beside Okanagan College's Vernon campus. This is an enhancement to the approved plan. In fact, showers were originally planned, then cut out of the project to save money. Now, they are back in. The contractor estimates a savings of approximately $75,000-$100,000 compared to renovating the building to add showers after completion. “Grants to assist with the cost of this addition are being vigorously pursued,” said David Sewell, the RDNO's chief administrative officer. Reserves from the Greater Vernon sub-regional parks function will be used to cover the costs beyond the grant amounts received. The construction costs are so far $500,000 over budget. The change may also delay the opening of the facility until August, instead of June.
