Greater Vernon communities will share more than $400,000 in funds taken in through traffic tickets. The money was collected for speeding and other driving infractions, and totals nearly $40 million province-wide.
Vernon will receive 192,084 in traffic fine revenue.
Coldstream will receive $18,082 in traffic fine revenue.
Lumby will receive a small community grant of $132,721.
The Regional District of North Okanagan will receive a regional district grant of $60,112.
“These grants show our government’s commitment to build stronger, vibrant and safer communities,” Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster said. “Local governments can use this funding to invest directly into programs and priorities that are important to each of them, improving the overall quality of life in our constituency." The funds will be used to provide more policing, new equipment, increased community safety initiatives, infrastructure and service delivery priorities. The grant programs, introduced six years ago, has seen more than $718 million returned to communities to be spent on local projects. Another $75 million will be doled out in June.
