Thousands Fewer Parking Tickets Issued

After years of being accused of being over aggressive in issuing parking tickets, Vernon's bylaw officers are now backing off that policy. In a report to council, Corporate Services city staff say a new focus has led to 2,745 fewer tickets being handed out since February, compared to the average over the last seven years. After direction from council earlier this year, the officers now put more priority on customer service, providing a longer grace period and giving out more warning tickets. Fewer bylaw officers is also a factor. The result is that city revenue for parking tickets is down $39,502 this year, and could lead to a potential $80,000 year end shortfall.
