The District of Coldstream is being proactive in connection with the proposed new arena for Greater Vernon. Council has approved changing it's contract with Greater Vernon Recreation Facilities to include the new arena if a borrowing referendum passes this fall. Mayor Jim Garlick says the Province has to first give it's approval, that has already been denied once before. "They have agreed to get it back to us, I think around the beginning of September. It then just has to go through the Board and we'll then set a date for this fall for it to go to referendum." The proposal calls for a second ice sheet to be added to Kal Tire Place. Garlick says changing to a newer facility makes sound economic sense. "If we are taking the Civic Arena operations costs, and we take it over to the new arena what is believed at this time going through all the numbers is that there will be a decrease in the operating side." Garlick says altering the contract for a newer facility will actually save taxpayers money. "We would be able to have one facility, so some of those staff that have to be at both facilities now, there would only be one facility. For people who are in charge of the cooling units, there would only be one cooling unit, so you would only need one person in that position."
