The Regional District of North Okanagan received over one thousand submissions from the public online with regard to proposed boating restrictions on the Shuswap River system. Limiting motor sizes and restricting usage areas have been proposed, which have created quite an uproar. Staff are now analyzing those comments and determining what possible changes need to be made. Administrator David Sewell says they are a long way from making any final decisions. "We still have considerable discussions that need to take place, potentially further studies need to be undertaken before we are in a position to go forward with any boating regulations whether they are the ones proposed or amendments to those." Further opportunities for public input will be arranged, and any possible final restrictions will have to be okayed by the Federal Transport Department. Sewell says that could be years away. "The process is not coming to a completion, we have a long way to go. All the people, the strong advocates for and the strong opponents to the boating regulations, there will be lots of opportunities for further input and for further discussion." "I don't like to say that 'hey government sometimes takes multiple years', but reality in this case, we are making public policy with long term implications. We are not rushing this. It will take long term because it has got to stand the test of time."
