Improvements coming to B.C. airports

The Government of B.C. is providing over $6 million in funding to B.C. community and regional airports this year, as part of the new B.C. Air Access Program. The program is part of B.C. on the Move, the Province’s new 10-year transportation plan. “Providing smaller and regional airports with funding support for infrastructure improvements was a common theme we heard during our B.C. on the Move consultations,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “The B.C. Air Access Program will help these airports make crucial upgrades to their infrastructure for safety, reliability and expansion purposes.”Through the B.C. Air Access Program, the ministry will cost share with public airports on projects such as lighting and navigational systems, terminal building expansion or upgrades, and runway improvements. These types of projects will allow airports to improve safety, accommodate larger aircrafts and more frequent flights, and further support the continuing growth of local and provincial economies. The ministry is investing $24 million over the next three years for the B.C. Air Access Program. (more)

Improvements coming to B.C. airports
Projects receiving B.C. Air Access Program funding include:

South Cariboo Regional Airport (108 Mile): $26,250 for the purchase and installation of a new emergency generator.
Chilliwack Municipal Airport: $315,584 for the Culvert Extension and Rehabilitation project.
Creston Valley Regional Airport: $157,877 for upgrades to the runway lighting.
Grand Forks Municipal Airport: $45,000 for Beacon Site upgrades.
Langley Regional Airport: $287,025 to rehabilitate the taxiways and aprons.
Long Beach Airport: $1.27 million for runway lighting.
Squamish Airport: $123,000 to rehabilitate the taxiway and apron.
Northwest Regional Airport (Terrace-Kitimat): $4.42 million toward expansion of the airport facility.
Williams Lake Airport: $486,387 to rehabilitate the runway and taxiway.
Dawson Creek Regional Airport: $82,311 to replace the terminal roof, add CCTV to the grounds and replacing the secure key control access system.

B.C. Air Access program
Eligible Projects
The British Columbia Air Access Program (BCAAP) considers applications from B.C. public airports under two categories — small rehabilitation and major projects.

Small Rehabilitation Project Considerations
Safety-related projects
BC Air Access Program share will not exceed 75% of eligible project costs
Projects are to be completed within one year of project approval

Major Project Considerations
Major safety and rehabilitation enhancements or projects that demonstrate significant economic benefits, are supported by a business case and have linkages to provincial strategies
BC Air Access Program share will not exceed 50% of eligible project costs
Submissions will be considered for multi-year projects. Project completion could take up to a maximum of three years to enable phasing of construction and funding.

Funding Partnerships
The BC Air Access Program encourages funding partnerships with local, regional and federal governments as well as agencies and private sector organizations.
