The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a food recall warning for field cucumbers purchased through Safeway for possible salmonella contamination. The recall also affects various in-store produced products that contain cucumbers. The affected produce was distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan. This recall applies to fresh field cucumbers sold in bulk, unwrapped and various in-store produced products that contain cucumbers, such as Greek salad, vegetable trays, sushi and sandwiches purchased from Safeway on or before Sept. 6. Consumers who are unsure if they have purchased affected products should check with their Safeway store. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased. The CFIA advises food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis. The recall was triggered by a recall by Andrew and Williamson Fresh Produce of San Diego, Calif., and may be associated with an outbreak in the United States. No illnesses related to the recall have been reported in Canada. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.
