Kelowna RCMP are looking for new auxiliary members. “Okanagan citizens, of good character, interested in becoming the ultimate volunteer,” are being sought, the RCMP says in press release. As volunteers, under the command of the RCMP, auxiliary constables participate in community policing service activities relating to public safety and crime prevention. Auxiliaries must contribute 160 hours of volunteer time per year, participate in community policing programs and, in a support role, ride on patrol with uniformed officers. “Auxiliary constables gain valuable knowledge and expertise in order to deliver crime prevention and community policing programs to the public,” adds the RCMP. “Auxiliary constables provide a local perspective to policing in the community they serve.” The auxiliary course spans a five-month period and is held on consecutive Saturdays. “The commitment to this training course is significant and attendance at all classes is mandatory.” Interested applicants must be at least 25, a Canadian citizen, have completed high school, have a valid Class 5 drivers licence or higher, and a certificate of medical suitability. They must pass a suitability interview, attain RCMP security clearance and must reside in the Central Okanagan. Applications are available at the Kelowna, West Kelowna and Lake Country detachments. Completed applications can be dropped off at any of those locations by Nov. 27. For further information, contact Bill Finney at 250-864 5937.
