Organizers of the Vernon Farmers Market are concerned about the site of a possible new ice sheet at Kal Tire Place. Market manager Ingrid Baron would like local politicians to reconsider the plan to add the rink to the north end of the building, which is the parking lot area where they've held their twice weekly markets since the facility opened 14 years ago. "I think they should think about the west option. It would be a win-win situation that way. We do realize that is a bit of an issue with the race track. We're hoping that will get resolved, and that will make the west option possible," Baron tells Kiss FM. Baron says if the new rink is added to the north, it could lead to them being forced to move to the Rec Centre parking lot for two years, which she says is not big enough. Baron says the twice-weekly markets attract about 100-thousand people a year with an economic impact of 3.3 million dollars. "I think that's the main reason the north was chosen, because I think originally the west was the choice, but because they (city) is not getting anywhere with the race track (Okanagan Equestrian Society), and what they feel is the urgency for a replacement ice sheet, they can't wait for the race track issue to be resolved," adds Baron. A regional district referendum for twinning Kal Tire Place is on hold, waiting for approval from the BC government. A manager from the City of Vernon's Recreation Department did not return a call for comment from Kiss FM News.
