Library board approves budget increase

Okanagan Regional Library’s 2016 financial process is wrapped up. Directors met Wednesday and agreed to a 1.98 per cent increase in the budget. “We are now including replacement of equipment and furniture in the capital budget,” said director Catherine Lord. “For operations, this will be a big improvement.” Individual communities will continue to be responsible for purchasing new furniture for their branches, but any existing items that need to be replaced will be covered by ORL’s collective tax base. “It creates an easier process to get equipment and not keep bothering everybody,” said director Mike Macnabb. One of the challenges has been the inability of electoral areas to individually fund furniture through regional districts for ORL’s 29 individual branches. The 1.98 per cent budget increase is largely a result of inflationary pressures, including wages and higher rent for branch sites, utility costs and book purchases.
