Motorists in Vernon may soon be able to pay their parking fee by phone, instead of plugging coins into parking meters. The Downtown Vernon Association will be making a presentation to Vernon council Monday, supporting the use of a mobile payment system called PayByPhone. The system allows customers to set up an account on their smart phone, and for a 25 cent convenience fee, they can use it to pay for parking, and to add time on if it's needed. Lara Konkin from the DVA says set up costs to the city would be low, and existing meters would not require expensive hardware, other than new signage and decals. "We feel that providing an easy to use mobile payment option that is both convenient and secure, will help alleviate merchant's concerns regarding parking and will contribute to an overall positive customer experience," Konkin writes in a letter to the city. Konkin says in the long term the mobile system could increase city revenues with people paying for extended periods of meter time. "Although integration of PayByPhone software with the current system is required, we do not foresee this to be a problem, as it has been successfully implemented in many other cities without issue." The system is already used in numerous other cities including Vancouver, Kelowna and Kamloops.
