Greater Vernon's water rates for 2016 have been approved by local politicians, and the impact will depend on how much you use. The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee gave final approval to the rates bylaw today. Chairperson Juliette Cunningham says some rates will go up, and some will go down. "There will be some where their cost for water will actually go down a bit. it depends on how much water they use because we have changed the rates. We've adjusted the base fee, and there will be some, in particular, the higher water users, their bills will go up." Director Bob Spiers says the impact will depend on the consumption rate. "The people in the 0 to 10 or 15 (cubic metre) range, we see a small increase of 2 to 3 percent. The ones in the middle category, including myself, will go down actually, because of the different consumption rates. And then at about 140 cubic metres per quarter -- I believe it's around that point -- they will start going up. That's where the 2 percent increase will go up, and some people at the highest level will have an 8 or 9% increase if you use thousands and thousands of cubic metres," Spiers tells Kiss FM. The base fee for homes will go down about 6 bucks per quarter to $95, but a new meter replacement fee will be tacked on, costing $7 per quarter.

Don Quixote Note:
These rates have to be ratified by the RDNO Board of Directors. Effective date for rate changes will be April 1, 2016.
Below are calculators updated with new proposed rates that you can use to determine the effect on your water account.
Simply place your average quarterly number of m3 of water consumption in the yellow box to see how this 2% rates increase will affect you. If you wish you can put in your quarterly consumption for the last 4 quarters and total the amount. Because of the quarterly variances this amount will be slightly higher than the average result. In my case my average quarterly consumption is 35.25 m3 in 2015 and my total bill for 2016 (assuming same consumption) will be $25.43 lower. It is $23.47 lower when I use the different quarters rate method.
