Coldstream residents will be given a free day at O'Keefe Ranch following council's decision to give a 1988 pumper truck to the ranch. The district had been planning to sell it. While there have been fire hydrants on the historic site since 2012, a big concern is the range of those hydrants. “One of the concerns at the ranch is the inability to to effectively direct water from our two hydrants to cover the 50 acres of the grounds,” Glen Taylor, O'Keefe's general manager, said in a letter to council. “We are not looking at getting into the fire protection business, however we are looking for a means to deal with wild land grass fires which may pose a threat to the 20-plus buildings we have on site,” Taylor added. “None of the buildings has sprinkler systems and most have shake roofs. The intent of the apparatus would be to prevent spreading fire and protect exposures.” The ranch has offered to set up a date when any Coldstream resident can get in for free by showing identification.
