An idea to use a smartphone app to pay for parking in downtown Vernon, will need further review by the city of Vernon. City staff say there are additional financial impacts that have to be considered under the Pay By Phone plan supported by the Downtown Vernon Association. The city says it would be charged 50 cents per transaction -- plus 1.6% of the transaction value -- by the credit card provider. That would mean when someone buys 30 minutes of parking for 50 cents, it would also cost city taxpayers 50 cents, plus the percentage fee. "Further review with other communities and financial impact are necessary prior to bringing forward a recommendation to council," reads a report to council from Corporate Services. The system is already used in Kelowna, Kamloops and many other cities.
