Plans for Vernon Regional Airport are being thrown open to the public once again. Residents and business owners are invited to a third and final public open house which will be held at the Lakers Clubhouse (7000 Cummins Road) on Wednesday, July 6, from 5-7 p.m. During the session, City of Vernon staff will provide a review and ask for input on city council’s endorsed development plan. In March, council voted 5-2 against a $4.3 million extension of the airport's one runway. However, council OK'd about $2 million for capacity improvements and upgrades within the existing airport lands without expansion or the controversial runway extension.
The objectives of the master plan are:
- to evaluate existing and future aviation needs
- to determine long range facility requirements
- to assess site development alternatives
- to produce a plan which yields an economically viable, safe and sustainable public facility
The new master plan is also intended to outline a vision for alternative ways to operate a viable small size airport within the city boundaries for the next 20 years. The airport has been in operation since 1946.
