The City of Vernon is moving towards allowing mini-pigs in homes. Council has directed staff to develop rules for keeping the pigs after two requests for that over the last two years, the most recent last month from resident Coralee Carrier about her 30 pound pot bellied pig Layla. Mayor Akbal Mund says communities have to adapt to changes like this."I have no problem is someone wants to keep a pet other than a dog, cat or bird. If you go outside the realm and you want to keep other animals as pets, sometimes communities have to take a look at that and say, 'Does this fit?'" Councillor Dalvir Nahal doesn't understand why allowing mini pigs has been such a big deal. We have already said in the past, it's okay, so I don't see why we cant just say it's fine, keep the pig, it's a pet. So if we want to change the bylaws, we should be doing it later, but we should at least make a decision on this because I don't think it's fair to the family." City staff will look into developing a licensing and regulatory scheme to change the animal regulation bylaw to require specific standards for care, maintenance and sanitation for mini-pigs in residential properties.
