Village of Lumby purchases land for flood mitigation

The Village of Lumby has taken a significant step in its desire to mitigate flooding. The village has purchased 84.2 acres of property within its municipal boundaries located along its western entrance. The property is comprised of about 73 acres of country residential and 11 of industrial, with Duteau Creek running the length of the property. The primary purpose for the acquisition is for flood mitigation. Secondary objectives include preserving the natural beauty of the Lumby entranceway and other community opportunities. “I’m thrilled we are able to make this announcement,” said Lumby Mayor Kevin Acton. “This acquisition provides us with a significant opportunity to help protect village residents and businesses from potentially destructive flooding.” The purchase price of the property was $720,000, which was funded though the village’s land acquisition reserve and other internal borrowing.“Staff are pleased to have been able to help council realize this important objective,” said Tom Kadla, the village’s chief administrative officer.
