Vernon council is backing an effort to get the BC government to eliminate the provincial sales tax on electricity used by businesses. A group of BC mayors -- many that have mills in their towns -- say it would help the forestry sector and protect jobs. Mayor Akbal Mund says council had one particular local business in mind. "Hopefully it will save some money, but it's more of a concern for DCT Chambers which ships all the chips to those mills, so if all those mills didn't exist, DCT Chambers probably wouldn't exist either," says Mund. Mund says Tolko -- which has its head office in Vernon and several local mills -- would also be impacted. Mund says council voted 6-1 to support the initiative, with councillor Juliette Cunningham opposed. "She thought we can't be nitpicking, feeling it's going to come from somewhere else, but, as it was stated, the government is already looking at eliminating this," says Mund.
