Last year the City of Penticton reduced its annual payroll by over $400,000 compared to 2008. However, while the city was paying less overall to its staff, the number of employees making over $75,000 (including benefits) nearly doubled while the number of staff making over $100,000 (including benefits) also increased by four. Less than a week since announcing the reduction of 10 positions, saving the city upwards of $700,000 a year in payroll, Penticton council received the city’s 2009 statement of financial information Monday, documenting staff and council’s salaries and expenses.
Paying out over $18.6 million in staff remuneration, the city gave 68 employees over $75,000 a year in 2009, up from 36 in 2008 and paid 14 employees over $100,000 a year. At least four no longer work at the city. Former director of corporate services Jack Kler, former director of human resources Dwayne Burdeniuk and former general manager of the city’s electric utility Terry Andreychuk all made over $100,000 last year — the three were fired March 2. And former city CAO Leo den Boer retired last year after making $159,235 in 2009, the highest salary in the city by a margin of just under $30,000.Some of the city’s top earners included: city engineer Ian Chapman, electric utility foreman Gregory Miller, director of development and engineering Mitch Moroziuk and director of parks, recreation and culture John Kirbyson, who all made over $110,000 in 2009.
City council received less compensation, with Mayor Dan Ashton making $57,691 and the councillors receiving $19,626 each. Councillors Dan Albas ($2,066), Mike Pearce ($2,473), Garry Litke ($2,526) and Andrew Jakubeit ($3,720) all used expanse accounts for city business, such as attending out of town conferences. Councillors John Vassilaki and Judy Sentes had no city expenses last year.Ashton’s 2009 city expenses came to $538.
