John Baird is everywhere these days - standing in for the Prime Minister during Question Period, turning up uninvited at Commons committees to speak for government staffers. Sometimes he even gets to handle his own portfolio - last week he announced money for airplane cargo security. On Thursday he graced the cover of Macleans.ca, the website of the Canadian news magazine. The publication had named Ontario Conservative government alumni, who has become one of the most prominent members of the Stephen Harper cabinet, its Parliamentarian of the Year. This is an award that is actually bestowed by Members of Parliament. The magazine asked all MPs to nominate the best of their colleagues in each of seven categories. This year, 202 MPs responded, casting votes for members both in and outside their parties. The votes were then converted to a point system to ensure that larger parties did not have an advantage. Which suggests pretty strongly that Mr. Baird is liked, not only by the members of his own caucus but by the folks across the floor of the House of Commons.
