The city of Vernon is keeping it's options open when it comes to funding the group working to bring films and TV productions to the valley. City council has issued a notice to pull out of the funding function for the Okanagan Film Commission at the end of 2011, if they choose to. Councillor Shawn Lee says the motion is really just a formality. "In any sort of contractual arrangement, if there's a requirement for notice of withdrawal, it's better to give the notice than not.I think we do something like that with the SIR (Sterile Insect Release program) too. It's not saying 'we are leaving', it just gives us that opportunity if something should drastically change."Acting mayor Patrick Nicol (pictured) it's not a reflection on the work the agency does to attract film and TV productions to the valley. "No it isn't. We are the biggest supporters of it.This is a really good piece of legislation that allows us, if we ever wanted to, say if something went awry with the organization, and we didn't want to be a part of it, then we would have the ability to withdraw."The city's provides about $16,000 a year to the commission which is based out of Kelowna.Councillor Mary Jo O'Keefe was concerned the notice would send the wrong message to the commission but when it came to the vote, she supported the motion.

O'Keefe is the one sending the wrong message-along withLee and others-when are they going to stop giving our money away for useless organizations. Lee comments on the Sterile Insect Program-what took place as far as the review and Vernon's excessive contributions?
For once, Mary Jo is right: it does send the wrong message, not only to the Commission, but to all of Vernon's partners in any regional or sub-regional function.
Disingenuous is the word that comes to mind.
If you don't want to be a part of it, Vernon, please withdraw. If not, stop messing around and start acting like a respectful, grown-up service partner instead of a whiny, petulant child.
Whoever gave Council this advice ("it's better to give the notice than not") should be fired.
I am embarrassed to be represented by this Council. Shame shame shame! It is no wonder you have such a terrible reputation with the Province.
