Gambling is big business in Vernon, with an estimated 32 million dollars spent at the local casino last year.  It also can cause big problems for an estimated four percent of customers. Michael Graydon, president of the BC Lottery Corporation, was in Vernon today for the launch of BC's first Responsible Gambling Awareness Week which will be held in Vernon January 14 to 20. Graydon tells KISS FM, the event points out the realities of gambling, and the resources available should people have problems. "Hopefully we will get people to think a little differently as they go through the process, and if they need help, then they'll have a better understanding how to seek it, and where to get it." Graydon says someone who is gambling more than they can afford is considered a problem gambler. "If it's starting to put stress and strain on your family and work, then that's a strong indicator that you need to seek help." He says province provides free counselling to anyone who wants it, and there's no limit on it. Annette Sharkey from the Social Planning Council says four percent of people who gamble have problems, such as overspending. "Certain populations are more at risk, so senors, young adults and First Nations." Sharkey says information kiosks will be around town including at Okanagan College, The Native Friendship Centre, and the Village Green Centre. "We encourage people to approach the booths. It's very fun and interactive, but really helps to get the message across about what the real odds are, and that gambling is really about entertainment, not about the next big win." City councillor Bob Spiers, who was at the launch event,  says a lot of money is spent at Vernon's Lake City Casino, some of which comes back to the city in an annual grant. "The total take at the casino is about 30 to 32 million (last year), I can't remember the exact figures, and last year, the city picked up $1.9 million (in a casino gaming grant). You can more information on the events at www.responsiblegamblingweek.ca  The week is sponsored by the BCLC and the city, will also be held in 2013, and could be used in the future in other communities.
