Greater Vernon residents could be voting in a referendum later this year, or perhaps in 2013. The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee has approved forming an ad hoc
committee made up of local government staff to explore a referendum
process for a 7.8 million dollar track and field-sports facility next to
Okanagan College in Coldstream. Vernon director Rob Sawatzky says there's no indication when a vote could be held. "That was not part of the discussion today. That's part of what would come out of setting up the committee." Sawatzky says the facility which features an Olympic sized rubberized
track and artificial playing field, could be a tough sell given the economic climate. "For something that big and expensive, to have any possibility of
success going ahead, you would have to have broad support from the
community which means a long collaborative process." The committee will report back to the board on the process, time
lines and budget needed to give the referendum the highest potential for
success. The idea for the facility on ten acres of farmland owned by the college, was first announced in November 2010. Given permission to use it for non farming purposes took two applications to the Agricultural Land Commission.
