“As a review of this scope would entail considerable expense to the city, if conducted by private auditors and consultants, having the province provide the service at their cost would be a prudent and sensible option to pursue.”

The city of Vernon will apply to get a financial audit from the province. Councillor
Bob Spiers says it's part of the new auditor general service being
provided to local governments by the BC government.
He says, "To start the process off, they seem to be willing to accept city's applying to sort of be the guinea pig. That's basically all it is." Spiers doesn't think Vernon will be chosen, as several communities will likely apply, and only one will get audited this year. The new agency will help communities find spending efficiencies by providing neutral, non-binding advice. The request for the city to apply came from the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce.
