Months of hard work by a volunteer committee in West Kelowna has paid
off, as the community was named one of five finalists in this year's
nationwide Kraft Hockeyville competition on Saturday night. Voting to determine the Hockeyville winner is now underway through
Tuesday. Anyone can vote, even repeatedly, as voting is unlimited. For reaching the finals, West Kelowna has won $25,000 toward arena
improvements and will host the CBC at Royal LePage Place on March 31
when the Kraft Hockeyville winner is announced live during Hockey Night
in Canada.
The winning Hockeyville community receives an additional $75,000 and will host an NHL pre-season game played in its local arena.
West Kelowna is now the lone B.C. representative in the contest,
competing against other communities across Canada. Osoyoos made it into
the final 15, but was eliminated in voting for the final five.
Campbell River also made it into the final 15 before being eliminated Saturday night. Vote totals for the three B.C. communities were: West Kelowna, 1,022,762; Campbell River, 423,073; Osoyoos, 200,225.
Though the public can vote from anywhere to determine the winner, the
local Hockeyville committee has set up a round-the-clock public voting
centre at the Comfort Inn in West Kelowna, which will remain open until
voting closes at 9 p.m. Tuesday.
To vote for West Kelowna, people can submit their votes online at www.krafthockeyville.ca or by phone, toll free, at 1-866-533-8066.
