Fifty students from through-out the Okanagan are signed up for the 13th annual Jean Minguy RCMP Youth Academy. The week long event starts April 29th at the Army Camp. Chairperson Terry Pakenham says it teaches students about careers in police work, including Minguy's two sons. "Last year, Kevin Minguy, Jean's oldest son, participated in the academy, and it was quite an experience for those of us that have been around and knew Jean. Equally exciting is this year, Jean's youngest son, Colin, will be going through, so Jean's legacy continues." Constable Minguy started the academy before he died in a boating accident on Okanagan Lake while on the job in 2005. Pakenham says partnerships are an important part of the academy. "We've gone into some funding relationships with some local municipal governments and regional districts up and down the valley. We've managed to get most of the detachment commanders in the valley on board with this, and they are now providing individuals, manpower and cadets." Organizer and RCMP Constable Kathy Szoboticsanec says fifty grade 11 and 12 students are registered. "We have one from Revelstoke, Salmon Arm, Armstrong and Enderby, all the way down to the border, so it's really exciting this year because we have equal representation from each district." There will be a new element for students at the academy later this month. Sam Mowatt and his wife Gia, and son Max (Vernon Viper) from Total Approach Fitness have joined the camp to provide fitness and yoga training. Sam Mowatt says, "Our total approach is not only the fitness, conditioning and strength, but more importantly a lot of the restorative and flexibility that my wife brings to the equation." Mowatt's wife has been a yoga instructor for 17 years, and says this is a chance for them to give back to the community.
