Wiebo Ludwig passes away at 70

Wiebo Ludwig Energetic City 04/09
Wiebo Ludwig, a polarizing figure in the debate over the oil and gas industry, has died at the age of 70 after a battle with esophageal cancer. Ludwig's son Josh confirmed his father's death saying that he died at home surrounded by his loved ones. "We will miss him as one who steadfastly and selflessly upheld the hope of the Gospel of Christ, as a loving husband, father and grandfather," his son Josh said in a press release. In April 2000 Ludwig was convicted of bombing a Suncor well site near his home. He was also found guilty of encasing a Norcen Energy well in concrete and counselling an RCMP informant to possess explosives. The RCMP also considered Ludwig a suspect in the EnCana Natural Gas bombings near Dawson Creek.  Although he was never charged, the RCMP arrested and searched his compound in 2010. Ludwig always maintained that his farm animals and relatives were made sick by sour gas wells that went up near his property in northern Alberta.
