BX park not just for the dogs

Dog owners are being told to back off.  There are concerns some people walking their dogs at BX Ranch Park want to exclude non-canine enthusiasts from the BX Road site. “There seems to be a view that it’s a dog park only and it’s not,” said Mike Macnabb, Greater Vernon Advisory Committee chairperson. “It’s a public park that allows dogs.” Signs restricting dog access to environmentally sensitive areas have been ripped down. “There is a fringe element creating some issues,” said Macnabb. Some vegetation along BX Creek has been destroyed by dogs entering the water. “We have an obligation to protect the environment,” said Macnabb, adding that feces could negatively impact water quality. The issue of permitted uses arose when members of the BX Community Association spoke to dog owners and they were told that events like a picnic would negatively impact pet access to the property. “The park isn’t just for dogs,” said Tannis Nelson, GVAC’s community development co-ordinator. “There are permitted uses for parks and dog uses have been identified.” BX Ranch Park hosted the former BX Stagecoach Stopover community gathering which was held for many years. GVAC is considering a master plan process to determine the future of the parks and some possible additions could include a playground. Macnabb believes the conflict between dog walkers and others can be resolved. “All users can get along. You can have a picnic there or walk your dog,” he said.
