Vernon is on the road to officially allowing low speed vehicles. Council has given a green light to draw-up a bylaw to permit the low emission, electric cars on city roads with speeds of 50 km-h or less. In moving the resolution, Councillor Patrick Nicol noted there's currently only one vehicle of that type in the city, owned by Geoff Elliott, who's been seeking the bylaw for two years. However, Elliott earlier told council, the city's endorsement would open the door for others to get the cars, which he says require far less maintenance than gas powered ones, and are less likely to be in crashes due to the lower speeds. He said, "They are fully insured by ICBC and operators need a drivers license. They are a step above a golf cart. They have to have all the lights and seat-belts."
