The Provincial Capital Commission has an entirely new board, including its first new chairman in a decade, as the nonprofit organization once charged with watching over some of the city's most prized properties carries on in scaled-back role. Bill Wellburn, chairman since 2002, said Thursday that he declined an invitation to serve again and is not critical of the province for cutting back much of the PCC's responsibilities. The province took control of property management from the PCC. Any significant decisions now must be checked by the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. Minister Ida Chong could not be reached Thursday. Of the six new board members appointed by order in council this month, only one, lawyer and Queen's Counsel Dennis Murray, is from Victoria. Dennis Everett of Vancouver is the new chairman. He is the only order in-council appointment returning. Everett is president of the Duncan Group of Properties, which manages a real estate portfolio, and has served as a governor and as chairman of Langara College's board.
The other new board members are:
- Linda Annis, Surrey-Cloverdale, owns Sirius Communications and is executive director of Vancouver Crime Stoppers.
- K. Wayne Lippert is a former mayor of Vernon and has served as chairman of the Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust and as chairman of the Regional District of North Okanagan.
- William Norton is active in agriculture and tourism in Prince George and has more than 20 years experience in government relations.
- Birgit Bennett is a director and past president of the Ballet Kelowna board and was a director on the board of the Kelowna Art Gallery.
- Diana Skoglund is with the marketing and communications department at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. (more)
