Tougher Competition For Minor Football

A Vernon minor football coach says it's another reason why the area needs a new sports facility. Bill Tarr says the Magnum Midget and bantam squads (14 to 18 year olds) will be playing against teams from the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley this season."It is going to be a step-up.  In the 30 years of Vernon Minor Football, it's something we've been hoping to happen, and it's finally come to fruition and we're really looking forward to it."Tarr, who coaches the Magnums, says it will allow local players to face much tougher competition and have regular season games against well established opponents. The Vernon teams have only been able to play Lower Mainland teams in the playoffs until now. Tarr says they plays their games at Grahame Park, but he's pushing for voters to approve a new sports complex by Okanagan College which could be put to voters later this year, or next. "We're going to be pulling people in from the coast and these teams can bring 60 to 80 people with them between players, coaches, family and fans and that really helps the local community."
