Staff Outline Merits of Antwerp Well

Written by Peter McIntyre 107.5 KISSFM Friday, 06 July 2012 14:09
The Regional District of North Okanagan is waiting for Interior Health to decide if one of the Antwerp Spring wells in Coldstream can be used again. A shallow well in that area was contaminated on January 13, 2010 when rain and warm weather caused manure in a field to get into the source. RDNO's Utilities engineer Zee Marcolin told the GVAC committee, the well they want to use is a deep one, and never received any contamination. She says it's located in a different aquifer, and is well protected from outside sources. Marcolin says if they get approval from IH, the well would only be used as an emergency backup for farming, during the summer. "We have to be prepared to deliver 240 mega litres of water a day, and capacity at Duteau Creek (Treatment Plant) can't sustain that demand if it's a hot day in the summer." One of the only concerns about the Antwerp deep well is it has a higher than normal amount of manganese which can affect the taste and cause staining, but that woulnd't be a factor is it was only used to irrigate crops.

Use of Antwerp Springs water is already OK for irrigation use. What the Utilities Engineer was asking for is the use of AS deep well for emergency DOMESTIC use. That is why higher than normal manganese content is a concern.
