Speed Watch Needs Volunteers

Speed WatchSpeeding drivers continue to be a big concern around the North Okanagan, with most of the complaints coming from Coldstream, Spallumcheen and Armstrong. Warren Smith from the Safe Communities Unit says in one recent Speed Watch session, 75 percent of the drivers were speeding, with 4 of the 55 vehicles going 20 km/h or more over the posted limit. "When data was collected from the same location with the marked vehicle and speed reader board out of view, the traffic speed increased to 95% of the drivers speeding, and 20 of 42 vehicles were in excessive 20km/h or more over the posted speed limit. 6 of the vehicles were observed in excessive 30 km/h over. These stats show that the Speed Watch program does work and can be quite effective in educating drivers." The Unit is seeking more volunteers to help with the program. "Complaints mainly come from residents in Coldstream, Armstrong and Spallumcheen. Otter Lake Road in Armstrong, Otter Lake Cross Road in Spallumcheen, Kalamalka Road and Middleton Way in Coldstream seem to be of the greatest concern," says Smith. Smith says North Okanagan residents have the right to be upset with the speeds that drivers are doing. "Drivers need to simply allot more time to get to and from their destinations, slow down and think about the risk they are putting themselves and others in. The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP is fully aware of these problematic areas and will continue to deploy enforcement operations to these areas. " Application forms are available at the City of Vernon Community Policing Office or through your local RCMP Unit.
